[Synology] Compatibility with Synology DSM Version 7
Synology has just released a DSM (7.0) blocking root access to packages.
https://www.synology.com/.../supported_third_party...
Mono and Zappiti Server are affected by the issue, knowing that Mono is not developed by Zappiti and is needed to run Zappiti Server.
Anyone upgrading to DSM 7.0 will no longer be able to use Zappiti Server on Synology.
Please find in the link below the procedure to install Zappiti Server on Docker (compatible with DSM7) :
If you have any problem during the installation please contact our support at tickets@zappiti.uservoice.com

@dr.briannovak did you find a way to install DSM 7 on the DS412+. I have one using it for back up
-
The_Zix commented
@dr.briannovak you didn't miss anything you have to enable SMB1

I actually installed docker per the instructions on a 412+ and can see the server from my Zappiti 4k HRD player. However, I cannot access the movie folder on the Synology unless I enable SMB1. What am I missing?

@The_Zix thank you! I posted the instructions on the Russian-language 4PDA forum. Anyone who needs it can use it. If you are not lazy in the evening, then I will add English to the instructions. If Zappiti developers are interested in this, I can send it to them.

@CatScar, congrats and well done on the work you've accomplished.

In general, I built a server. Installed OpenMediaVault 5.6. Installed the OMV-Extras plugin (Docker+ kit Portianer.io ) Portianer.io - this is a control plugin over Docker. Then, following the instructions of Zappiti, but taking into account the difference in the installation process, I launched Zappiti-Server. It works in Docker and is visible on the network, it has full functionality. There is one small problem that does not affect the work. For some reason, the name of the local server does not show the way it was indicated during installation. But again, this does not affect the work.

I could not figure out where step 4 should go. Create a configuration file. I googled and came up with 'on mac' or 'on windows', but not 'on synology'.
Still disappointed in the absence of support for non-geeks like me.
I have my Zappiti now on sale.

try this as a workaround
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52520008/can-i-install-docker-on-arm8-based-synology-nas
trial and error you might get lucky and there will be no harm done (disclamer I think so :) ), worst the docker package wont work, but when installing zappiti docker (DO NOT) delete your current zappiti as per the instruction, simply copy, so you can fall back :). (simply disable zappiti package and copy if you get docker initially up and running)
Hope this helps and good luck

And now since my son accidentally pressed 'update' I cannot run my Zappiti. S%$t. Plenty of movies but my Zappiti cannot reach them.

Remco Van Ravenswaaij commented
@The_Zix: I run Zappiti on my Synology DS420j still operating on DSM6.2 and ignoring numerous update warnings on both my Zappiti and on my DiskStation.
I still fail to understand why only the latest hardware is supported by Zappiti. My DS420 is 1,5 years old...

@CatScar quite an interesting journey, would be great to share your experience and findings. Good luck!

@The_Zix I currently have Synology 415 Play running, which does not support Docker. In this regard, I lost the desire to keep it and use it for Synology Server. It is impossible to update, there are 2 ways left. Buy a new Synology or just make a home NAS on a third-party system. At the moment, the choice fell on the "TrueNAS Scale" system. It supports Docker. I ordered hardware for a home NAS, I'm waiting for it to come. The last one comes on 11/27/2021. After that, I will carry out all the settings and installations. And I want to try to install Synology Server from Docker. How and what will happen, I will write.

The_Zix commented
@Remco Van Ravenswaaij what is the latest at your end?
-
The_Zix commented
@CatSar theoretically you are correct. This is the purpose of docker. If Zappiti has complied the docker image to run multi-archtiecture and if your target non synology NAS has a similar architecture to one of the synology ones, I do not see why it will not work. Best thing is to try. Would be good to hear how it goes
-
CatScar commented
Theoretically. Zappiti Server is installed from the Docker repository on Synology. This means that Zappiti Server can be installed on any NAS running Lunux that has Docker support. Is that true?
-
The_Zix commented
@Jasper Waale, if you installed the latest zappiti docker package
https://storage.sbg.cloud.ovh.net/v1/AUTH_fbded571e5e14cf4b5ccf3f2717efb01/DockerImage/zappiti-server-latest.tar.gzonce you stop and start the server from the docker, on the boot it will check (in theory) if there is a new package and it will update.
I could not confirm this yet
hope this helps -
Jasper Waale commented
Just to let you all know, I did this, and I was worried my 5 years old NAS might not be able to support it, however no issues less than 3% CPU when running a 4K film only thing that I wonder about
is how do I update the server-side ??? -
Remco Van Ravenswaaij commented
With the stunning silence by Zappiti after my last question, I am very inclined to sell my zappiti and find another media player.

Remco Van Ravenswaaij commented
As mentioned by 'SD': I have a Synology model which does not support Docker (in fact, the majority of models is not supported, only the top models).
What to do? I find it too expensive to buy a new model Synology.
